Heineken's AI tap turns personalisation into a new beer growth model

A beer printer becomes an AI discovery engine

Heineken is taking product personalisation somewhere alcohol brands have rarely managed to take it before: inside the liquid itself.

Its new Personalised Draught system lets drinkers scan a QR code, answer questions about their preferences and receive a beer selected from 135 possible Heineken "expressions". The system can vary characteristics including flavour intensity and alcohol strength, spanning 0.0% to 5% ABV. The chosen beer is then blended from integrated barrels and dispensed from a single tap, with a personalised label printed for the finished serve. 

The consumer inputs can go well beyond conventional tasting questions. Heineken says its AI can draw on signals including favourite films, personality traits, the weather and the energy of the group to translate context and preference into a beer recommendation. The brewer says the underlying combinations have been calibrated by its global master brewer, Willem van Waesberghe, and R&D specialists. 

That distinction matters. This is not, based on Heineken's published description, generative AI inventing an entirely new beer recipe every time someone approaches the tap. There is a finite universe of 135 pre-calibrated outcomes, and the liquid is produced by blending from the machine's integrated barrels. The AI therefore appears to function primarily as a translation and recommendation layer - interpreting relatively soft consumer inputs and matching them to a controlled product architecture. That gives Heineken personalisation without surrendering product quality or brand control. 

Personalised Draught also represents an evolution rather than a completely new direction. When Heineken Studio launched in May 2025, the company was already describing the concept as a first-of-its-kind "beer printer" that allowed visitors to play with attributes such as taste and strength. The Studio itself was conceived as an experimental hub inside the Heineken Experience, alongside small-batch Pilot Brews, flavoured nitro foam tops and limited-edition collaborations. Its current Amsterdam experience now explicitly promotes an AI-powered tap with 135 possibilities. 

The important development in 2026 is therefore not merely an upgraded dispenser. Heineken is connecting product modularity, AI recommendation, experiential marketing and consumer feedback in one physical interface.

Why 135 matters more than the headline

The temptation is to view the project as another high-budget brand activation: put an AI label on a futuristic tap, take it to Formula 1 and generate social content. That interpretation misses the commercially interesting part.

For a conventional packaged beer portfolio, offering 135 variants would be economically absurd. Each permanent SKU can introduce formulation, packaging, forecasting, retailer negotiation, inventory and marketing requirements. Personalised Draught effectively separates consumer choice from packaged SKU proliferation. Heineken can present a vast choice architecture at the point of experience while keeping the physical system considerably more constrained than 135 independently stocked beers. The exact configuration of its integrated barrels has not been publicly detailed, but Heineken confirms that the system blends the selected beer from those barrels rather than storing 135 finished products. 

That makes the tap potentially valuable as an innovation instrument. Instead of asking consumers whether they would buy a hypothetical "lighter, drier 3% lager", a brand can potentially let them choose it, taste it and respond to it. Preference becomes behaviour rather than an answer to a concept-testing questionnaire.

Heineken is unusually explicit about this side of the proposition. Luis Hernandez of Heineken Studio said consumers' choices and feedback will help the brewer understand how people enjoy beer in different contexts and inform the future of the category. 

For marketers, that changes the role of experiential investment. A sponsorship activation has traditionally been judged through measures such as reach, sampling, engagement and brand lift. A system such as Personalised Draught introduces another potential return: structured product-learning data.

Consider what Heineken could learn at aggregate level if the concept reaches sufficient scale. Does bitterness preference change at a music event versus a sporting event? Do consumers choose lower ABV later in an evening? Does a drinker who normally describes themselves as a non-beer drinker select fruitier or less intense profiles? Does Mexico produce different preference clusters from Las Vegas or Amsterdam? Which combinations drive repeat selections or positive feedback?

Heineken has not said it is currently using all of those variables analytically, so these are opportunities rather than disclosed capabilities. But the architecture creates the possibility of turning experiential marketing into a continuous innovation lab. That is a more consequential proposition than AI-generated novelty.

There is an established precedent for AI-assisted flavour discovery elsewhere in alcohol. Diageo's FlavorPrint technology asks consumers questions, maps their preferences against a proprietary sensory database and recommends matching products. Diageo subsequently extended the same technology into cocktails and in 2024 launched FlavorPrint Connect, which allows whisky discovery experiences to be personalised around individual flavour profiles. 

Heineken pushes that logic another step down the funnel. Instead of only recommending an existing product, its system can alter the served product within a controlled set of parameters.

The ABV continuum is the bigger strategic move

Among all the variables in Personalised Draught, alcohol strength may ultimately prove the most strategically significant.

Consumers are not being presented simply with "beer" and "alcohol-free beer". Personalised Draught offers outcomes across a 0.0% to 5% ABV spectrum. 

That turns moderation from a binary portfolio decision into a configurable product attribute.

The timing is significant. No-alcohol beer has moved considerably closer to the mainstream in several markets. IWSR's Autumn 2025 Bevtrac study found that 40% of German drinkers surveyed had consumed no-alcohol beer during the previous six months, up from 34% in 2023. Participation was 32% in Japan and 10% in the US. IWSR also reported that Germany's no-alcohol beer volume grew 6% between 2023 and 2024. 

Heineken itself has been investing heavily behind the segment. Heineken 0.0 grew 10% in volume in 2024, while the company has described the wider 0.0 category as having delivered a 10% CAGR over the preceding five years. 

Personalised Draught potentially reframes that growth opportunity. Instead of forcing an occasion into "alcohol" or "no alcohol", the system could help consumers discover that on a particular occasion they prefer something at 0.0%, 2%, 3.5% or 5%.

For brand owners, this is a much larger strategic question than whether Personalised Draught itself is eventually installed in thousands of bars. Beverage alcohol portfolios have historically been organised around discrete products with fixed strengths. A configurable draught environment can expose the demand curve between those products.

Imagine discovering that a material proportion of consumers who currently order a 5% lager actually prefer a similar taste profile at 3.2% when given a neutral choice. Or that people who say they "do not drink beer" respond positively to a lighter-intensity, lower-ABV expression. Those insights could influence permanent NPD, pack architecture, pricing, occasion strategy and how zero-alcohol products are positioned.

Heineken's Formula 1 connection makes the experiment particularly relevant. The brewer renewed its global F1 partnership in 2025 with an explicit commitment to promote responsible consumption and Heineken 0.0 alongside the sponsorship.  Personalised Draught is scheduled to travel to the Mexico City Grand Prix, running from October 30 to November 1, 2026, before the Formula 1 Heineken Las Vegas Grand Prix on November 19-21. 

A technology that can offer different ABVs from the same branded experience fits neatly into that strategy: the brand does not have to abandon the beer occasion to accommodate moderation.

Personalisation becomes a data and innovation flywheel

The most interesting implication for CMOs is what happens after the personalised pint has been poured.

The journey starts digitally. Consumers scan a QR code and enter preference information on their phone. It then moves into the physical product as the machine translates those inputs into a beer. Finally, the consumer receives a personalised label, turning the result into an object that can be remembered, compared or shared. 

In other words, Heineken has compressed several traditionally separate marketing activities into a single transaction: consumer profiling, recommendation, sampling, product customisation, packaging personalisation and feedback.

That creates a potentially powerful loop:

Ask -> recommend -> pour -> taste -> capture feedback -> learn -> improve the next innovation.

The model also gives personalisation a reason to exist. Many brand personalisation campaigns change only the packaging, name or advertising creative while leaving the underlying product unchanged. Diageo, for example, has separately used generative AI to let consumers co-create personalised artwork for bottles through its Project Halo technology.  Personalised Draught moves customisation closer to the core consumer promise because the recommendation changes the liquid being consumed.

For beverage companies, that matters because flavour data can be more strategically useful than demographic data. A conventional CRM profile might know that a consumer is 32, lives in London and attended a sporting event. A well-designed taste platform could potentially learn that the same person prefers low bitterness, higher flavour intensity and lower ABV in social settings. The second set of information is much closer to product development.

This also helps explain why Heineken Studio deserves more attention than a conventional innovation showroom. Its public proposition is that products are continuously being tested: Pilot Brews are small-batch experimental lagers, Flavoured Foam Tops borrow from cocktail culture, Personalised Draught varies the beer itself and Limited Editions combine brewing with cultural collaborations. 

The company has already demonstrated how Studio concepts can move outside Amsterdam. In November 2025, it released a limited-edition 4% ABV lager in France with designer Axel Chay, featuring peach and pineapple notes and Camargue salt.  In 2026, the Heineken Studio Truck took concepts including Personalised Draught on the road in France before the newly announced Formula 1 appearances. 

The pattern is increasingly clear: owned innovation space, mobile experimentation, cultural event, consumer feedback, potential scale.

For a global brand, that can shorten the distance between R&D and the consumer considerably.

Where the model gets harder

The same characteristics that make Personalised Draught interesting also create challenges if Heineken wants to move beyond controlled activations.

First comes brand consistency. Heineken has spent decades teaching consumers what a Heineken tastes like. Giving people 135 ways to alter that experience creates a tension between personal relevance and distinctive product identity. Heineken's answer appears to be to define the outputs as Heineken "expressions" calibrated by its brewing and R&D teams rather than unrestricted user-created recipes. 

That is an important design principle for other brand owners. Personalisation should probably happen inside recognisable brand guardrails, not by handing over the keys to the product.

Second comes operational reality. A spectacular machine inside the Heineken Experience or a branded F1 activation has a different economic model from a busy independent bar. Scaling the technology would require the experience to justify its footprint, maintenance, cleaning requirements, training, dispensing speed, ingredient logistics and reliability. Heineken has not yet announced a broad on-premise commercial rollout, and its disclosed availability remains the Heineken Experience and Studio Truck, with additional locations promised. 

That makes Personalised Draught more useful today as a signal of future direction than as evidence that the conventional beer tap is about to disappear.

Third is data governance. The moment a personalisation system begins connecting preferences, personality information, feedback and potentially identifiable consumer records, the value of the data rises alongside the responsibility attached to collecting it. European data-protection rules require transparency around personal-data processing and apply strict conditions where consent is the legal basis. European regulators also stress that robust data protection is central to consumer control and trust in digital services. 

For alcohol marketers, the threshold should be higher still. A recommendation engine involving ABV cannot simply optimise for engagement or conversion in the way a streaming platform optimises what programme comes next. The experience needs appropriate age controls and responsible-consumption guardrails. Heineken's own digital properties use age gates in relevant alcohol experiences, while the company publicly positions responsible consumption as a core part of its brand approach. 

There is also a potential reputational trap in using variables such as "mood" or personality to select alcoholic products. Even where such processing is legally permissible, an alcohol company will need to think carefully about which forms of personalisation consumers perceive as delightful and which could appear manipulative. The safest strategic principle is straightforward: use AI to make discovery easier and moderation more available, not to maximise alcohol intake.

What brand leaders should take from it

Personalised Draught matters less because Heineken has found a way to serve 135 beers from one branded experience and more because it challenges the traditional sequence of drinks innovation.

Historically, a company identified an opportunity, researched it, formulated a product, tested it, produced it, packaged it, persuaded the trade to list it and then waited for sales data to reveal whether consumers agreed.

A configurable physical platform creates the possibility of reversing part of that process: let consumers explore a controlled design space first, observe what they actually choose, and use those behaviours to determine which propositions deserve further investment.

For a CMO or brand owner, that suggests three changes in how to think about innovation.

The tap can become media. It is no longer simply the final piece of distribution hardware. It can tell a story, make recommendations, generate a personalised artefact and turn a routine purchase into an experience.

The tap can become research. When hundreds or thousands of people actively choose between flavour intensity, strength and other characteristics, experiential sampling can begin producing product intelligence as well as impressions.

And the tap can become portfolio strategy. A modular platform can test spaces between established SKUs, particularly across ABV, before a company commits to the cost and complexity of launching another permanent bottle or can.

That logic is already appearing elsewhere in drinks. Diageo is using AI to map flavour preferences and guide whisky and cocktail discovery.  Heineken's contribution is to connect the recommendation directly to a configurable draught serve.

The biggest opportunity, therefore, is not "AI beer". That phrase risks reducing the concept to technological theatre.

The opportunity is adaptive drinking experiences: branded systems in which one physical platform can respond to different consumers and occasions while continuously teaching the brand what people actually want.

Heineken Studio describes itself as "always in beta", using experiments in beers, flavours and serves to rethink the future of beer.  Personalised Draught may be the clearest expression of that philosophy so far.

For alcohol companies watching from the sidelines, the question is not whether they need their own AI tap. It is whether their innovation systems can learn from consumers as quickly as a tap like this potentially can.
